VC: Greatest game ever graces Wii - Mario 3 at last!

The title screen for Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES
I really can't contain my excitement ... one of the best games and arguably THE best game of all time is out this week on Virtual Console.  Those state side have already got it, but now it's the turn of Europeans to once again, ride the bullet bills in Super Mario Bros. 3!  A total bargain at only 500 Wii points, we think this qualifies as VC game of the week, if not the month and the year.  Mario 3 was a first in so many ways - it was on the humble NES and not the SNES as people nowadays often mistake it for, it had interactive map screens, loads of hidden stuff and bonuses, difficult worlds, warps and some items which allowed Mario to do almost anything ... including take to the skies and fly!

Mario with his raccoon ability!Blue's Journey

Ok, now that I've got that off my chest (and before I go and get stuck in to Mario 3 myself), there are two other offerings this week that do deserve your attention.  Firstly, the NEOGEO offering is the colourful platformer, Blue's Journey (1990).  Players assume the role of the small but heroic Blue, who must rid planet Raguy of evil. The Daruma Empire has taken over planet Raguy and has been busy enslaving the planet's inhabitants and polluting the lush and green environment. Armed with just a leaf whip, players must help Blue equip himself to fight the Daruma Empire and restore Raguy to it's original, greener, glory. A bit of an environmental romp, then!

Power Golf

The Turbografx (1989) offering this week is Power Golf, offering 18 holes to complete over challenging fairways. Power Golf features three main modes: Stroke Play, Match Play and Competition, with the opportunity to play against two human or computer controlled opponents. Adding to the challenge, players must size up the green, avoid the sandtraps and apply the correct amount of power and spin to become the ultimate golf champion. 600 Wii points says this isn't a bad little deal.

At the end of the day, if you have a Wii you should get Super Mario Bros. 3. I cannot overstate the sheer brilliance of this absolute classic, glasscase game. Millions of people already own it on the NES, and now you can own it either again, or for the first time. I'm a fangirl - but with good reason.  This game is flippin' awesome, and you should buy it. I'll never recommend a VC title like I will this one.
