Off the Shelf: Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2008
EA are one of the strongest games publishers in the world, and currently their success can be attributed to a few key, well placed incomes. One of them is the spawn of annual releases covering many major sporting events globally, and one such strong brand is the Tiger Woods PGA Tour golfing series. Still going strong, Tiger heads for the fairways again in Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2008. So why purchase this one?
We're going to cut straight to the chase and tell you this - we're not golf fans, at all. The only golf games personally purchased around here are Wii Sports (which includes golf), and previous Mario Golf titles. Tiger had to impress us, and he has.
Ignoring some cheesy playable characters and a slightly patronising tone at certain stages through the game, the options available to you in this incarnation of Tiger Woods match and surpass previous editions. One that we were interested to see there was the sitting down option for controls, enabling you to play more effectively whilst sitting down on your sofa and using the Wiimote. Since this focuses on the gamer and giving them choice and options, we're pleased to see this here.
Graphically it certainly does the job and we didn't notice any major issues. Characters move realistically and comedy has been thrown in to the game. The tutorial is not very long but equips you to do well, forcing you to get to grips with some of the harder stroke types before letting you continue - sounds harsh but you're grateful for it forcing you to learn this stuff once you're out there.
There are plenty of options that should please even a golfer, looking for their favourite set up. For the noob, it's easy enough to sit tight and take the game's recommendations throughout. Getting the ball into the hole is tricky compared to getting a nice drive or a good curl ball, but you are rewarded if you practice and pay attention to the tutorial/manual. Putting is definitely demanding, but this adds lastability as well as making you more satisfied when you get a nice putt.
The learning curve is on the steep side for beginners, but it is rewarding and should hold interest unless you're really terrible. There is enough here to warrant a fresh purchase if you've got the 2007 Tiger game and completed it
With lovely sounds from the crowd, amusing animations and vocals, delightful golf courses and a host of options for every skill level, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2008 has plenty for the beginner or the golf fan. We recommend considering this unless you either hate golf altogether, or have the last Tiger game and didn't play it much. Tiger's still growling, and he doesn't look too shabby at all.
