Inside Nintendo House: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption revealed!
Unfortunately due to staff illness, all that was on offer for playtest at Nintendo House this week was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the first Wii incarnation of this venerable and much-loved series. As usual you take control of Samus Aran as she battles various space monsters across the galaxy, only this time there is a not-particularly-inspired twist: there is a "dark" Samus, as the heroine is being slowly corrupted by the mutagenic material Phazon, and you complete various levels as either one or the other versions of the character. The story sees you chasing nefarious Space Pirates across the solar system, in league with other bounty hunters.
Naturally one of the most obvious advances in gameplay comes through the use of the Wii remote and Nunchuk, both of which are used throughout the game. At first the controls appear surprisingly sensitive and you'll find yourself wheeling through wholly unintentional 360-degree spins as you try and lock your crosshair onto an enemy, but after the first few battles the movement becomes second nature and you don't even have to think about what you're doing with your hands. It's a real pleasure to turn cranks, insert handles and do all kinds of intuitive things with the Wii remote. Once you've gotten the hang of the controls, combat becomes almost thrillingly real and is a complete joy.
Once you're beyond the admittedly fun fripperies of the Wii controllers however, what you've got at core is very much just more of the same Metroid - it looks, sounds and feels almost identical to either of the Gamecube versions, but is more of the same always such a bad thing? If you're a fan of the series, you won't want to miss out on what the Wii can do with it and if you're a newcomer, it's a perfect place to start exploring the Metroid universe.
