Mario chosen as world's greatest gaming icon

Nintendo should be pleased this morning, at least more so than usual. According to MSN UK Tech & Gadgets, their unlikely plumbing hero (or as King Koopa used to call him, 'faucet freak') Mario has been chosen by more than 4000 people in a new survey to discover who the world's greatest gaming icon is.

Lara Croft came in second with just over 1000 votes at 24 per cent. Other famous stars include Sonic the Hedgehog, Pacman and Link from the Legend of Zelda series.

With sterling platform games to his name and a host of spin off titles, some of which became famous in their own right (Super Mario Kart), Mario and his little brother Luigi certainly deserve the badge of honour, as a generation of gamers remember growing up with him.
